Arrr, matey! Sir Henry Morgan traversed the waters of the Caribbean nearly 300 years ago showing the world what pirating was all about. Consequently, he never settled for inferior rum and his swashbuckling legend endures in this titular spirit. Produced in Puerto Rico for the last 60 years, Captain Morgan sources fine rums from several Caribbean islands for the final product. The blend is set to rest in charred oak barrels for a year and infused with a regiment of Caribbean spices throughout this respite. Its rich and balanced expression beckons for lime and cola, but don't be afraid to experiment with fresh fruit juices and vanilla ice cream.
The no-nonsense bouquet opens up with marshmallow, light toffee and light honey. Early taste is sweet and molasses-centric, then at midpalate there’s a spiced honey flavor that gently guides you to the creamy, cake frosting finish. I liked this affable spiced rum when I first reviewed it 12 years ago and I still like it. 85-89 Score: 89.
