Aromatic mineral and apple blossom notes wind through this dry and juicy Champagne, accenting flavors of grainy yellow pear, anise, fleur de sel and lemon zest. Crisp finish. Drink now through 2020. Alison Napjus

The 2002 Brut Special Club comes across as soft and understated. There is plenty of nuance in this polished, impeccable Champagne. Bright floral notes add lift and complexity to the fruit. The aromas and flavors are very typical of Chardonnay, while the Pinot is mostly felt in the wine’s structure. This is a pretty wine, but not quite as pedigreed as the 2004 tasted alongside it. The 2002 Special Club is 70% Chardonnay (from Dizy), 30% Pinot Noir (from Ay and Hautvillers). Chiquet didn’t make a lot of 2002 Special Club, as he didn’t think the wine would age terribly long. Dosage is 8 grams per liter. Disgorged January 7, 2011. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2017. Antonio Galloni

Light gold. Nectarine, jasmine, iodine, ginger and smoky lees on the smoky nose, with chalky minerality emerging with aeration. Then tight and linear in the mouth, showing impressively deep, palate-staining flavors of anise, citrus and pit fruits. Finishes with outstanding energy and clarity, the iodine and mineral notes echoing emphatically. Josh Raynolds
