Mount Eden Vineyards was established in California's Santa Cruz Mountains in 1945, long before notions of boutique winery or cult-Cabernet entered the popular wine culture. As many of the wineries in Napa valley have concentrated on producing limited luxury bottlings and seemingly "must have" collectibles, Mount Eden has walked the line by focusing on the production of quality Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Cabernet from vineyards within their unsung appellation. The Estate Cabernet is one of our favorites. Eschewing the popular bigger-is-better mentality, winemaker Jeffrey Patterson coaxes plenty of ripeness and structure out of what is ultimately a beautifully layered and balanced Cabernet. Supple cassis and spice flavors lead to a fine finish that only gets better with the addition of grilled or broiled beef.
