Historically many of the Portuguese table wines that came to the US were subject to the mercy of shoddy transportation, flimsy corks, and flat-out dubious wine marked by cooked fruit aromas and muddy, earthen flavors. But now it seems like things are changing and wineries such as Caves Vidigal are bottling wines that deserve attention. The Tinto Reserva hails from vineyards in Estremadura, along the Atlantic coast of Portugal. This reminds us a bit of an inexpensive Duero red with plenty of dark fruit flavors and a deep, plumy finish. This is a top red to serve with basic beef roasts, stews, or skin-on grilled fish.
