Though it's crafted with the virtually unknown Castelão grape, this classic Portuguese red is easily the most recognized still wine from a country famous for fortified Ports. The Periquita isn't a blockbuster, but it comes packed with plenty of lively red fruit flavors and a light- to medium-bodied texture that seems to work just as well with lighter fish-based dishes as it does with hearty stews or roasted red meats. Some of our favorite food pairings include crispy potatoes with garlic aioli and paprika, whole roasted fish with crispy fried herbs, and broiler-seared hangar steak slathered in piquant Romesco sauce.
