Abe Schoener's Scholium Project is among the most revered new wineries to emerge on the American wine scene in the past five years, with sommeliers such as Per Se's Paul Roberts and critics at the San Francisco Chronicle and the International Wine Report championing his maverick approach to winemaking and the essence of wine in general. While some of the wines veer towards cerebral vinous studies in terroir and grape variety, breakthrough bottlings like his Tenbrink vineyards Petite Sirah and this Verdelho-based Naucratis eschew Abe's intellectual pursuits and provide wines that are just downright delicious. The Naucratis is a perennial USQ top seller and is rarely seen after its initial release. Exotic aromas of peach and honey lead to a wine with a succulent texture and a long bracing finish. This would work well with buttery scallops or miso-glazed cod. Very limited. |
