This ruby-colored red is the best example of classic Rioja for less than $10 we've tasted. A traditional blend of Tempranillo and Mazuelo, Faustino's charming entry-level bottling eschews inkiness and power for elegance and quaffability — a far cry from the teeth-staining blockbusters currently in vogue at other wineries in Rioja. The Faustino has all the telltale Rioja aromas of sweet dark cherries and vanilla that linger through the light- to medium-bodied finish. This is as juicy as Rioja gets and really hits the spot with simple snacks like roasted almonds, cured meats, and olives, or richer dishes like roasted lamb chops and braised short ribs.
