Wine educators will tell you that Pinotage is South Africa's most famous grape, a hybrid created by crossing the noble Pinot Noir with the rarely heralded Cinsault. Although most are best avoided, a handful of good Pinotage can be found from producers such as Kanonkop, Beyerskloof, and our friend, Ken Forrester. Considered one of South Africa's top producers of quality Chenin Blanc, Forrester produces our favorite Pinotage value with this purple-labeled Petit bottling. Emphasizing purity of fruit and gulpability over cost-raising new-oak aging, the Petit Pinotage offers an abundance of spicy, bright cherry aromas and flavors that carry through to a pleasingly juicy finish. This is easy enough to enjoy with the bold flavors of Mexican foods like carnitas and tacos al pastor as well as succulent burgers and fire-grilled shrimp. |
