Jumilla's Gil family (Albacea) consults for this winery located in Montsant, a region famous among wine cognoscenti for its proximity to the ultra-chic vineyards of Priorat. A mere 20 kilometers from the ancient Roman ruins of Tarragona, old-vine Garnacha and Mazuelo grows on broken schist (licorella) producing concentrated fruit that lends the wines a formidable intensity. While many Priorat wines command $100 and up regardless of quality, good Montsant can be had for a fraction of the cost. This baby Priorat combines Grenache, Syrah, and Mazuelo for a full-bodied red with plenty of dark fruit and spice flavors and aromas. Despite its richness, the Bula finishes with plenty of freshness. We suggest pairing this delicious Spanish red with lamb burgers, lamb chops, rib-eyes, or slow braised short ribs. |
