2009 Au Bon Climat - Pinot Noir Arroyo Grande Talley Vineyard Rincon

Though the famed grand cru vineyards of Burgundy have a 1,000 year head start on California's numerous single-vineyard designations, a handful of these domestic sites have shown a potential for "grand cru" status, having produced a few decades worth of world class pinot noir. The Talley family's Rincon vineyard, planted in 1982 in the Arroyo Grande Valley, is one of a half-dozen sites in California with a consistent record of quality fruit. The Talley's keep the majority of Rincon's fruit for themselves, but a miniscule amount is given to Au Bon Climat's Jim Clendenen whose Historic Vineyard series of pinots and chardonnays aims to highlight south central California's top sites. Procured exclusively for USQ's savvy sippers, Au Bon Climat's Rincon Vineyard Pinot Noir is as good as it gets. Packed with aromas of ripe black cherries and sarsaparilla, the Rincon's mouth-filling texture flaunts layers of red fruit flavors and a seamless finish. Of course it's great to enjoy on its own, but check it out with an herb-rubbed roast chicken, or an entire roast duck served atop farro with mushrooms and bacon.
