The Sonoma Cutrer Sonoma Coast Chardonnay 2023 is an exceptional expression from a vintage marked by unique climatic conditions, showcasing the winery's dedication to crafting elegantly structured Chardonnay. This wine is a luminous reflection of the diverse and prestigious Sonoma Coast appellation, blending fruit from four estate vineyards with grapes from a select group of dedicated growers.
The 2023 growing season began with revitalizing winter rains and continued with cooler spring and summer temperatures, allowing for gradual, extended ripening and optimal flavor development. Grapes were harvested in the cool early mornings and immediately chilled to preserve their fresh flavors and natural acidity. After careful hand-sorting, the fruit was whole-cluster pressed to ensure delicate juice extraction, avoiding bitter tannins. This golden-green free-run juice was then settled before undergoing fermentation in both French oak barrels (a mix including 14% new oak from esteemed coopers like Remond and Rousseau) and stainless steel tanks. The wine completed 100% malolactic fermentation and was aged sur-lie (on its yeast lees) in French oak for eight months, enhancing its texture and complexity.
Pouring a rich, medium straw color, this Chardonnay enchants with inviting aromas of stone fruit, apple blossom, honeydew, and pineapple, all subtly complemented by delicate oak spice. The palate is lush, offering a blend of ripe pear and golden delicious apple, perfectly balanced by Sonoma-Cutrer's signature bright acidity and a soft mid-palate. The experience culminates in a sophisticated finish distinguished by gentle barrel spice, making it a vibrant choice for gourmet meals or simply savoring on its own.
