When an occasion calls for Champagne it's important to avoid substitutions and to uncork something worth savoring. No Champagne is as recognized or as eagerly toasted as Veuve Clicquot. This storied bubbly has roots in the early 1900s when Madame Clicquot took control of the business and instituted a number of revolutionary practices, such as riddling, that are used to this day. Lately, the luxurious Brut Yellow Label has never tasted better. A blend of mostly Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier, with close to a third of Chardonnay, this iconic Champagne boasts fresh aromas of quince and baked apple along with lively citrus flavors and a silken texture that invites another sip. This crowd pleasing bubbly is easily enjoyed on its own and shines when paired with savory delicacies such as caviar or smoked salmon rosettes.
First, Veuve Clicquot Yellow Label looks beautiful: golden-yellow, with a foaming necklace of tiny bubbles. Next it is so pleasing to the nose: initially reminiscent of yellow and white fruits, then of vanilla and later of brioche. Note the fine balance between the fruity aromas coming from the grape varieties and the toasty aromas, the result of the three years of bottle aging. The first sip delivers all the freshness and strength so typical of Veuve Clicquot Yellow Label with a symphony of fruit tastes following (pear, lemon). Here is a true member of the Brut family, well structured, admirably vinous. The lingering aromas echo and re-echo, with each fruit or almond notes distinct. Veuve Clicquot Yellow Label manages to reconcile two opposing factors - strength and silkiness - and to hold them in perfect balance with aromatic intensity and a lot of freshness. This consistent power to please makes it ideal as an apéritif, and perfect as the champagne to enjoy with a meal.
A nice crisp structure focuses the graphite, honey and citrus flavors. This is rich, but remains smooth and elegant, with a lingering aftertaste of honey and pastry. Drink now. Bruce Sanderson - November 2008
The NV Brut offers up attractive notes of smoke, tar, rich ripe pears and flowers in a medium to full-bodied style. There is a good measure of persistence, although the wine could use a little more polish on the finish. This is Lot 14009913, disgorged between December, 2007 and January, 2008. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2010. Veuve Cliquot Ponsardin is one of Champagne's best known brands thanks to the success of its ?yellow label? non-vintage wine and the tete de cuvee La Grande Dame. Antonio Galloni - December 2008
