| Description of Event: |
Austria’s wine culture is defined by a deep respect for nature and a commitment to indigenous grape varieties. From the granite soils of the Weinviertel to the sun-soaked plains of Burgenland, a new generation of winemakers is redefining what it means to farm responsibly. By prioritizing organic and biodynamic practices, these producers are crafting wines that are not only cleaner but also more expressive of their unique origins. This tasting highlights three leaders of this Austrian renaissance. First, we explore the Gruber Roschitz Gruner Veltliner, a pure, focused white from a sibling-run estate dedicated to organic farming. It captures the crisp, peppery essence of the Weinviertel. Next, we pour the Umathum Rotburger Classic. Produced by the legendary Josef "Pepi" Umathum, this biodynamic red (known elsewhere as Zweigelt) offers a masterclass in balance, utilizing native oak barrels to highlight its clear fruit aromatics. Finally, we feature the Moric Blaufrankisch, a wine that treats this rustic grape with the elegance of a Grand Cru Burgundy. Winemaker Roland Velich uses open-vat fermentation to coax out high-toned notes of blue fruit, spice, and black tea. Join us at Union Square Wines to taste how minimal intervention in the cellar leads to maximum character in the glass. Whether you are a fan of crisp whites or complex, spicy reds, these Austrian bottlings offer a compelling look at one of Europe's most exciting wine frontiers. You're cordially invited to our event, and while reservations aren't necessary, feel free to register if you'd like! |
