Dead Reckoning 83 Islands Pure Single Rum offers a rare glimpse into Vanuatu's nascent rum scene. Distilled in pot stills and aged for 3.3 years in virgin American oak, this molasses-based rum represents the inaugural bottling from 83 Islands distillery. A tropical aging process resulted in a significant 22% angel's share.
This limited release, with only 240 bottles produced, marks a unique collaboration between Australian indie bottler Dead Reckoning and Vanuatu's first rum distillery. Union Square Wines secured a portion of the 125 bottles allocated to the United States.
83 Islands, founded in 2019 by Pierre-Luc Chabot, overcame significant challenges to establish rum production in Vanuatu. Chabot's commitment to local sourcing spurred the development of a sustainable sugarcane industry, working with local farmers to cultivate heirloom Vanuatuan cane varieties. This dedication to terroir shines through in the rum's character.
Dead Reckoning's selection of this 3-year-old expression highlights the distillery's early potential. The rum's tropical aging and virgin oak maturation contribute to a distinct flavor profile, capturing the essence of Vanuatu's 83 islands. This bottling is a testament to both Chabot's vision and Dead Reckoning's discerning palate.
