This distinguished spirit, crafted from a robust mash bill of 80% New York rye and 20% New York barley malt, first rests for a minimum of 18 months in new, charred American oak barrels. This initial aging develops a classic foundation of caramel, vanilla, and rye spice. The true alchemy, however, occurs during an impressive additional finishing period of three and a half years in freshly emptied American "Sherry" wine casks, sourced directly from Five & 20's own on-site Mazza Vineyards. This immediate transfer into still-fresh casks, often within 24 hours, ensures maximum flavor absorption and integration.
The result is a remarkably complex and layered whiskey, bottled at 99 proof (49.5% ABV). The nose is immediately inviting, with evident sherry-derived notes of bright citrus, luscious cocktail cherry, sweet raisin, and intriguing rancio (a mature, nutty character) beautifully complementing the rye’s inherent spice.
