2006 Domaine Francois Raveneau - Chablis 1er Cru Montee de Tonnerre

Wine Spectator

Like a rich lemon custard, this white fills the palate, yet has enough structure to keep it from being soft or heavy. Caramel and honey tones enter on the long finish. Drink now through 2018. Bruce Sanderson

Wine Advocate

From vines averaging 40 years of age, the Raveneau 2006 Chablis Montee de Tonerre features ripe pineapple, lychee, grapefruit, and brown spices; piquant, pithy, yet deeply sweet nuttiness; an almost tactile sense of chalk dust; formidable sheer density; and a brothy richness that can only be compared with a bone-rich meat stock reduction. It finishes with citric brightness, richness of fruit, and profundity of minerality, and should reward up to 10-12 years of cellaring.

Bernard Raveneau is an unabashed partisan of his 2005s – and no wonder, based on the subset of those that I tasted, including a magnificent Valmur which he rightly terms “complete” and “close to his ideal.” Raveneau is less effusive in praise of his 2006s – each of which I tasted from a selection of barrels – opining that lavish fruit and richness are precisely this collection’s fortes. I think he underestimates the depth of his own 2006s, and only hope I have opportunity to revisit some of them in five or ten years. David Schildknecht

International Wine Cellar

Bright yellow with a green tinge. Cool aromas of crushed stone, citrus peel and white flowers. Dense, sweet and minerally, but quite youthfully closed and strict today, showing none of the honeyed character of the 2006 vintage. In fact, this broad, rich wine boasts terrific verve and finishes with palate-staining citrus and stone flavors. This is 13% natural alcohol with four grams per liter of acidity. It will be fascinating to compare this and the more austere 2005 a decade or so down the road. Stephen Tanzer

A gentle touch of wood highlights airy yet slightly riper high-toned and admirably pure aromas of white flower, pear and quinine that gives way to supple, sweet, mouth coating and impressively concentrated flavors that exude a marvelous intensity on the long, powerful and driving finish supported by a solid acid spine. Definitely worth a look if you can find it but unlike most '06s, be prepared to have at least some patience as this is unusually firm for the vintage. Allen Meadows
