Bojo do Luar Do Bojo Vinho Tinto offers a captivating and truly singular expression of 100% Bastardo, sourced from venerable 80 to 100-year-old vines at Quinta do Poldrado. This unique parcel, farmed with organic practices in Portugal’s Trás-os-Montes region, lies on granitic soils at 650 meters altitude along the margins of the Tâmega River, near Vidago, overlooking a two-thousand-year-old Roman bridge.
This distinctive red wine is a pure reflection of the Bojo do Luar project's "monastic winemaking" philosophy, which emphasizes minimal intervention and draws inspiration from ancient, natural techniques. Hand-harvested grapes are destemmed and transferred to traditional 1,500-liter 'talhas' (clay amphoras) to begin fermentation with indigenous yeasts. A key element, unique to this project, is the addition of finely ground chestnut flower to the grapes at this stage, acting as a natural stabilizer. After a four-week maceration at a controlled cool temperature, the wine is pressed and returned to the talhas to age until bottling. It is bottled unfined, unfiltered, with only a minimal touch of SO2.
The result is a lighter-bodied red wine, at just 12% alcohol, offering a delicate and expressive tapestry of flavors. Expect vibrant red fruit notes characteristic of the Bastardo grape, intertwined with an earthy minerality shaped by the granitic terroir and talha aging, all lifted by a fresh, energetic acidity. The chestnut flower may contribute a subtle, intriguing aromatic nuance to this truly distinctive and remarkably alive wine.
