The Irouleguy Rouge “Ohitza”, is a wine that originates from the steep hillsides of the Pyrenees within the French Pays Basque. The 245 hectares of this appellation are almost exclusively dedicated to red grapes. These vineyards, ranging in altitude between 200 and 450 meters, feature inclines up to 70% and are often planted along narrow terraces, demanding an extraordinary amount of hand labor. The unique soil of Irouleguy, a red sandstone rich in iron, is complemented by a richer mix of clay/limestone and some outcrops of limestone. These south-facing vineyards are shielded by the surrounding mountain peaks from the Atlantic's wet weather, with cool and wet springs balanced by an “Indian summer” that allows the full ripening of the grapes into October.
The Irouleguy Rouge “Ohitza” cuvée, typically made from Tannat and Cabernet Franc, is a testament to tradition - "Ohitza" is the Basque word for tradition. The grapes are harvested manually from sandstone soils at mid-elevation. The wine undergoes fermentation in stainless steel with a maceration of around seventeen days, followed by aging in a combination of older barrels and cement tanks. Every three months, the wine is racked, assembled, and then redivided among the barrels and tanks. After a year, a final assemblage is made, which continues to mature until bottling in June, eighteen months after harvest.
Upon tasting, this Basque mountain wine reveals a deep garnet color, with aromas of blackberries and notes of spices. The palate offers a nice attack, lots of freshness, and a balanced tannic presence.
