Paolo Bea Rosso de Veo 2019 offers a compelling entry point into the singular world of one of Italy's most revered natural wine producers. From the heart of Montefalco in Umbria, this wine embodies the Bea family's deep commitment to tradition, patience, and minimal intervention farming and winemaking, guided by the influential Giampiero Bea, co-founder of the ViniVeri (Real Wine) group.
Sourced from the estate's younger Sagrantino vines, primarily grown in the high-altitude Cerrete vineyard (1300-1500 ft) on limestone-clay and pebble soils, "Rosso de Veo" (named for the local dialect's pronunciation of Bea) provides a unique perspective on this powerful Umbrian grape. The winemaking follows ancient wisdom: organic viticulture, spontaneous fermentation in stainless steel, and an exceptionally long maceration period of 40-50 days on the skins. This extended contact builds profound structure and complexity.
Following fermentation, the wine embarks on a patient aging journey – approximately one year in stainless steel tanks, followed by two years in large, neutral Slavonian oak barrels (botti), and a final year aging in bottle before release. Bottled unfined, unfiltered, and with no added sulfur, the 2019 Rosso de Veo is an unabashedly authentic and expressive reflection of Sagrantino and its unique Umbrian terroir. Expect intensity, robust structure, and complex layers ready to unfold.
